Delivery, Returns & Commission Terms

Last updated August 2026. These terms explain how handmade commissions, customer-supplied books, delivery, cancellations and returns are handled.

Clear terms help protect both you and your book. These policies explain what to expect when ordering handmade work or sending a personal copy for customisation.

1. Handmade Products

Blood & Ink Books creates hand-painted, sprayed and stencilled book edges. Minor variations in colour, brushwork, positioning, pattern, paint texture and small details are part of handmade production and do not automatically constitute a fault.

2. Custom Commissions

Custom commissions are individually created according to the agreed book and design direction. Before work begins, the customer receives confirmation of the book, design concept, price, additional charges and estimated turnaround. Significant changes after approval may incur a charge.

3. Commission Pricing

Current starting prices are £15–£50 for simple sprayed/stencilled edges, from £65 for standard hand-painted fore-edges, £150+ for complex collector commissions and from £250 for multi-book sets. Final pricing depends on size, complexity, materials, number of books and working time.

4. Deposits & Payment

Custom hand-painted commissions generally require a 50% non-refundable deposit to reserve the slot and cover work already undertaken, subject to statutory rights. The remaining balance must be paid before dispatch.

5. Customer-Supplied Books

Customers are responsible for sending the correct edition and securely packaging it. Photograph the condition before posting and use tracked and/or insured delivery where appropriate. Blood & Ink Books cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage occurring before the book is received.

6. Suitability, Valuable & Sentimental Books

Not every book is suitable for every technique. Blood & Ink Books may advise against a technique where there is a significant risk of damage or an unsatisfactory result. Customers should discuss rare, valuable or irreplaceable books before sending them.

7. Books Supplied by Blood & Ink Books

The customer is responsible for the book cost plus artwork and applicable delivery. Rare, expensive or special editions may require advance payment for the book.

8. Turnaround & Priority Orders

Turnaround times are estimates unless a specific deadline has been expressly agreed. Complexity, drying time, workload, material availability, delivery delays and unforeseen circumstances can affect completion. Priority work may be accepted for an additional fee where capacity allows.

9. Delivery & Delivery Damage

Completed books are carefully packaged. Customers must provide an accurate address. If a parcel appears damaged, contact bloodandinkbooks@gmail.com promptly and retain the book, packaging and delivery label.

10. Ready-Made & Non-Personalised Products

Ready-made products are completed items offered as pictured. Eligible non-personalised online purchases may carry statutory cancellation and return rights under UK consumer law.

11. Personalised & Custom-Made Products

Different cancellation rights can apply to goods made to a customer's specifications or clearly personalised. Where the personalised-goods exception applies, the standard change-of-mind cancellation right may not apply. This does not affect rights where goods are faulty, damaged or not as described.

12. Cancellations

Contact Blood & Ink Books as soon as possible if you need to cancel. Once customisation has begun, cancellation may not be possible because the book generally cannot be returned to its original condition. Statutory rights remain unaffected.

13. Faulty or Incorrect Orders

If an order is faulty, damaged, incorrect or significantly different from the agreed commission, contact Blood & Ink Books. Where statutory standards have not been met, an appropriate remedy will be provided in accordance with applicable UK consumer law.

14. Artistic Interpretation & Design Changes

Customers commission work in the artistic style of Blood & Ink Books. References may communicate mood, colour, composition or themes but do not guarantee an exact reproduction. Significant changes after approval may carry an additional charge.

15. Copyright & Third-Party Artwork

Blood & Ink Books will not knowingly directly reproduce another artist's work, publisher artwork or official special-edition design without appropriate permission.

16. Photography & Social Media

Completed work may be photographed for portfolio, website and social-media purposes. Customers should advise if a commission is a surprise gift or should not be shared before a particular date.

17. Care

Keep painted books dry, avoid prolonged direct sunlight, avoid rubbing or scraping detailed edges, keep away from excessive heat and moisture and handle with clean, dry hands.

18. Statutory Rights

These terms do not limit rights that cannot legally be excluded under UK consumer law.
